An exposition of the major prophetic revelations found in the Bible, particularly those in the New Testament.

In this historic volume, veteran missionary and Bible expositor Robert Finley explains why the Apostle John said THE TIME IS AT HAND when he wrote the Book of Revelation. Most of the Apocalypse is devoted to the three and a half years of GREAT TRIBULATION which Christ foretold as God's judgment on those who condemned Him to death and murdered his followers. These events occurred 66-70 A.D. No further (future) "tribulation period" is mentioned in Scripture.

1. Current teachings about a fictitious "Antichrist" that's supposed to come in the future are purely imaginary. There is no basis in the New Testament for such a concept. For 900 years (650-1550 A.D.) many Christian leaders rightly believed that Muhammad was the Antichrist foretold in the Epistles of John. He was not "against Christ," but as an "anti-climax" over 14 centuries Muhammad "has taken the place of Christ" for millions of people in Europe, Asia and Africa. Muhammad's total influence has been a thousand times greater than all other antichrists combined: past, present and future. Chapter 6 of THE TIME WAS AT HAND exposes "The Antichrist Mythology" being taught erroneously by many evangelicals today.

2. There is no mention of a future seven-year (or 3½ year) "tribulation period" anywhere in the New Testament. Rather, three other periods of tribulation are mentioned. There was the "great tribulation" when over three million Judeans were bottled up inside the walls of Jerusalem without food for 3½ years from 66 to 70 A.D. They were continually fighting, and killing each other by the thousands, until Roman armies mercifully destroyed the city. Over one fourth of the Hebrew population in Judaea, Samaria and Galilee was also killed during that frightful period of great tribulation. Also mentioned in the New Testament are the times of tribulation which believers in Christ have suffered for almost 2000 years, and the tribulation which Christ will bring at His second coming. Chapter 5 of THE TIME WAS AT HAND explains how current teachings about a soon coming "tribulation period" are mostly fictitious.

3. When asked for the sign of His second coming, our Lord Jesus never mentioned "Israel" or Palestine. Rather, the only sign He gave was that "The gospel must first be published among all nations" (Mark 13:10). Chapters 12 and 14 of THE TIME WAS AT HAND show why MISSIONARY ESCHATOLOGY is the only biblical doctrine of the end times. When our Lord has a witness among all of the 7000 or more nations on earth, THEN SHALL THE END COME (Matthew 24:14).

4. The present-day state of Israel has no prophetic significance. If it did there would be some mention of it in the New Testament, but there is none. Chapter 16 of THE TIME WAS AT HAND explains why there is no biblical basis for political Zionism now being endorsed and supported by many evangelical Christians.

5. The 144,000 Hebrew believers mentioned in Chapters 7 and 14 of Revelation were called out between 30 and 70 A.D. to give the gospel to other nations. Included among them were Peter, Andrew, James, John, Paul, Barnabas and all of the other Judaean believers OF THAT GENERATION. That's why they were called the FIRSTFRUITS UNTO GOD AND TO THE LAMB. Chapter 8 of THE TIME WAS AT HAND makes these facts clear beyond question.

6. THE BEAST mentioned in Revelation 13 was the Roman Empire, and its collapse is described with the prophetic words AS IT WERE WOUNDED TO DEATH (Revelation 13:3). But ITS DEADLY WOUND WAS HEALED when the Vatican dynasty revived it and called it THE HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE for 700 years. The medieval papacy was the SECOND BEAST (Revelation 13:11) which revived the Roman religion and Christianized it. Martin Luther and other reformers incorrectly said that the Pope was the Antichrist. Rather, the medieval popes were the fulfillment of Paul's prophecy regarding "THAT MAN OF SIN" (II Thessalonians 2:3). Chapter 13 of THE TIME WAS AT HAND shows how events foretold in Revelation 13 were literally fulfilled during the "dark ages" 550-1550 A.D.

7. Regarding the end of the church age Christ said, "This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come" (Matthew 24:14). He preached "the kingdom of God," not the "kingdom of Israel." "The law and the prophets were until John; since that time the kingdom of God is preached" (Luke 16:16). His kingdom includes some from every tribe and nation, as God promised Abraham. It has nothing to do with "Israel" or any other political entity. If we want to know when Christ will return we should watch the spread of the gospel among those still unreached of the 7000 or more tribes and nations in the world. This is called MISSIONARY ESCHATOLOGY. Chapters 12, 14 and 15 of THE TIME WAS AT HAND make these distinctions clear.

8. What some call REPLACEMENT THEOLOGY is not theology at all. It is an erroneous concept used by persons who do not fully understand what the Bible says about "Israel" and about "the church." Chapter 11 of THE TIME WAS AT HAND explains what the Bible teaches, in contrast with misleading statements being made by certain evangelicals who have not yet discerned how the Old Testament defines "Israel" and the New Testament revelation concerning the true church.

9. The second coming of Christ will not be in two stages. When He comes FOR HIS SAINTS, born again believers will be caught up to meet Him AS HE COMES. We call this THE RAPTURE. He will BRING WITH HIM the eternal spirits of believers whose bodies have already died and raise their dead bodies from the dust of the earth or the depths of the sea. Chapter 15 of THE TIME WAS AT HAND explains how He will then KEEP COMING AND TAKE OVER THE PLANET.

10. The BATTLE OF ARMAGEDDON will not be fought in Palestine. It will be fought in the skies with rockets and missiles and atomic bombs. In THE TIME WAS AT HAND Chapter 15 explains what will happen, based on II Thessalonians 1:7-10 and Revelation 19:11-21.

11. Other topics clarified in this book include THE WRATH OF THE LAMB, the SEVENTIETH WEEK OF DANIEL, BABYLON THE GREAT IS FALLEN, the TIMES OF THE GENTILES, GOG & MAGOG, the FIG TREE PARABLE, the CHOSEN PEOPLE idea, the PEACE OF JERUSALEM, the SEED OF ABRAHAM, the KINGS OF THE EAST, the DAY OF THE LORD and many other subjects of Bible prophecy.

Robert "Bob" Finley is a leading proponent of MISSIONARY ESCHATOLOGY. He says that the key to understanding biblical prophecy is to watch the spread of the gospel of Christ to every nation. He developed this understanding while traveling for many years as a missionary evangelist in Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America. He served with Youth for Christ, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association until he started his own organizations in 1953. He was the founder and first president of International Students, Inc. (ISI), Overseas Students Mission (OSM), and Christian Aid Mission in the U.S. and Canada. His home base is in Charlottesville where he attended the University of Virginia and in 1944 was an honor student, president of the student body and undefeated Inter-Collegiate Boxing Champion. He is the author of two other books, The Future of Foreign Missions and Reformation in Foreign Missions.
